Can you share a little more about your values?

We turn discarded single-use plastic bottles into sunglasses. The frames are 100% recycled PET – no metal, no screws, nothing else added. We designed the hinge so it too is made from recycled plastic. The bonus is that makes the glasses modular so you can change the arms, fronts and hinge clips to suit your style and mood.

As well as being 100% recycled, our frames are recyclable. It is important to us that our supply chain is completely transparent. We manufacture our sunnies locally through a family business in Sydney. We source our recycled PET from an Australian company however they have to source the plastic from Thailand, as well as a couple of Australian suppliers, because Australia is not set up to supply this kind of plastic at the quality we need for manufacture. Our manufacturing process has been developed with minimal waste in mind. We collect all the offcuts so we can make display units with them. For every pair we sell, we remove a kilo of plastic waste from our oceans.

Which particular materials do you use?

Recycled PET only – because single-use plastic is a problem that needs addressing. So not only do we stop bottles going to the ocean and landfill, but we also raise awareness of the issue and hopefully make people think twice about buying a plastic bottle in the first place.

Any extra efforts you make at Good Citizens that you can share?

It’s taken two and a half years of testing and experimenting to get the manufacturing process right. It hasn’t been easy and there have been many tears along the way, but now we’ve cracked it, we will look at new products and maybe even other waste materials.
