Who makes your clothes?

We see our suppliers as partners and they are either individual or small, family-run Australian businesses. They share our values of fair conditions, are paid living wages, treat others with dignity, and work in safe and comfortable environments. Our relationship with each person is built on a mutual respect for one another. We’re in constant contact, and visit them regularly. They’re so much a part of our lives, as I’m sure we are to theirs.

Can you share a little more about your values?

Ethically made: We produce in honesty and in alignment with our principles on human, animal and environmental welfare.

Locally made: By consciously making in Australia, we hope to reinvigorate the local industry and keep these wonderful people in jobs doing what they love.

Made to order: When you place an order with us, you aren’t getting an item that’s been in plastic, sitting around in a warehouse waiting to be sold. You’re getting something made specially for you and only you. With a little patience, you’ll have your piece cut, sewn and delivered within 2 weeks.

Minimal waste: We envision a greener future without the environmentally devastating effects of clothing waste. By adapting a made-to-order method of manufacturing, our garments are only produced when they are required, one at a time, rather than in large quantities – eliminating 90% of the waste contributed by the traditional bulk production business model.

Charitable: We’ve always run the business by nurturing and nourishing the value of community. Every woman deserves to feel empowered. It is this belief that drives the brand, from the garments we design to how we give back. That’s why we donate $1 from every purchase to Australian charities supporting women that help them make powerful life changes to take back their confidence.

Sustainable: We’re committed to working with respect to the environment. Our sustainability mission is more than how we make our clothes, it starts from how we design to the way we source fabrics.
We advocate a slower, more mindful model of fashion, with small thoughtful ranges. Not wedded to seasons and the fashion calendar, we release new wardrobe essentials every 2 to 3 months that are relevant and add value to our community in the present moment.
The materials sourced are made with respect to people, and have minimal impacts on the environment throughout its production and lifetime after wear.
Even the packaging we use to ship our garments is respectful to the environment. We use compostable mailer bags by and acid-free tissue paper which gently lines the fabric with a neutral ph.

Which particular fabrics do you use?

We use natural fabrics that are durable, of quality, feel soft on the skin, and are comfortable to wear. We partner with Australian fabric importers and actively seek to use repurposed (i.e. deadstock) fabrics that are left over from other fashion labels who overestimated their needs. We free these fabrics from being sent to landfill and transform them into beautiful new garments. Currently 70% of our styles are made using deadstock, with a goal is to increase this to 80% in 2021. We still find it challenging to source ethically for trims, though are consciously striving to do better.

Any extra efforts you make at NATALIJA that you can share?

We believe fashion should be a source of confidence, not angst. That’s why we’re here to help women everywhere develop a positive relationship with the way they look and dress, to improve their self-esteem. We want to empower women to embrace their own style and take an eponymous approach to dressing. It’s about providing women with quality wardrobe essentials they can customise, and make distinctively theirs—tailoring the design to suit style preferences including straps, length, colour, fabric, and fit.

Can you share some labels you admire?

Everlane, for their radical transparency. Filippa K, for their quality and minimal design approach. As well as some local labels like Spell Byron Bay and NAGNATA for being on the forefront of ethical practices and sustainability.
