Bilboa

Colourful, statement Australian Made wardrobe staples.

Ethically made. Locally made. Made to order. Minimal waste. Sustainable. Transparent.

Emphasising beautiful shapes, and interesting prints, Bilboa strives to consciously create, quality handcrafted goods, with an elegant yet quirky aesthetic.

Bilboa is located and manufactured in Byron Bay, NSW.

Who makes your clothes?

A local seamstress and cutter, along with me and my in house staff.

Can you share a little more about your values?

Ethically/Locally Made: By manufacturing locally I am able to ensure that side of the supply chain is kept fair and I can easily check up, manage and change if needed. By working alongside my cutter and seamstress from my own studio means the working conditions are kept clean, safe, and welcoming- in the Byron hinterland, in a light bright airy space, overlooking gumtrees. They get to choose their own rate as freelance makers, and with flexibility of hours and leave. Fabric supply chains are a lot harder to maintain and judge fairness, so I always choose organic and fibres grown/made locally in countries that have stricter fair working conditions, or from factories that have ethical and environmental certifications and are regularly audited to ensure their workers are receiving fair wages and treatment.

Made to Order: Most of Bilboa garments are made-to-order and even better customisable for diverse sizing and style.

Minimal Waste: Styles are designed and the pattern made to fit the fabric for the least waste. Any scraps are utilised for smaller items (including packaging), and then finally personal projects.

Sustainable: All fabrics are either organic, deadstock or natural fibres meaning they are reutilised or will completely biodegrade. Prints and natural dyes adhere to strict environmental standards. All paper products used in house are made from post consumer products and completely recyclable/biodegradable.

Transparent: All materials and methods used are stated clearly in products, including origin and where they are sourced from. Techniques and daily process are shown regularly online and through social media, and customer questions are answered thoroughly.

Which particular fabrics do you use?

Linen, Hemp and Organic Cotton: Because they are all natural fibres and will biodegrade at the end of their lifespan, the farming practices are more sustainable, the hand-feel, the durability and versatility.

Any extra efforts you make at Bilboa that you can share?

I try to source and include at least one completely Australian Made fabric for each range, though there are very limited options at the moment.

Can you share some labels you admire?

Sister Studios, Collective Closets, Courtyard LA, Milk & Thistle.
